Cultural Awareness Days

Autumn Term 2025 - Theme: Authors

The children from each year group had a day themed around a diverse author.  They researched their author to find out about their life before using the author's work to replicate their style in an original piece of writing.

Summer Term 2025 - Theme:

The children from each year group had a day of immersive Aboriginal art. They followed our three stage (Imitate, innovate, invent) approach to produce a final piece. Children created a fact file about the style of art and were able to practise creating artwork in a similar style before creating their own final piece. Classes used a range of mediums to create some fantastic work.

Spring Term 2025 - Theme: Brian Clarke

The children from each year group had a day of immersive art. They followed our three stage (Imitate, innovate, invent) approach to produce a final piece based on the artist Brian Clarke. Throughout his career, architectural artist Brian Clarke has endeavoured to fully integrate his medium within architecture. Widely considered the most important artist working in stained glass today, he has revolutionised not only technologies but also philosophical conceptions of what can be achieved through this medium. Equally important is his pictorial practice, explored in canvas paintings, collages, three-dimensional sculptures and leadworks. The children produced their very own stained-glass window using perspex and sharpies.

Autumn Term 2024 - Theme: Alma Thomas

The children immersed themselves in a creative day of art based on the African-American artist Alma Thomas. Alma Thomas was a teacher and artist who developed a powerful form of abstract painting late in life. From the mid-1960s, she produced brilliantly colored and richly patterned works intimately connected to the natural world.

Summer Term 2024 - Theme: Independence

The children took part in a day of cultural awareness with the theme of independence. The classes chose to learn about either American or French independence.

Spring Term 2024 - Theme: Carnival

Many cultures around the world enjoy big and vibrant celebrations at this time of year. Often linked to Catholicism, many carnivals are linked to Lent. The children studied the location and history behind the festivals before designing costumes and props associated with the carnival.

Nursery and Year 1 looked at Chinese New Year, Reception and Year 2 explored Mazatlan, Year 3 and Year 4 studied Rio Carnival, Year 5 and Year 6 researched the Venice Carnival.

Autumn Term 2023 - Theme: LIGHT

The children immersed themselves in a day of rich learning opportunities about a festival or cultural celebration. At this time of year, many festivals around the world celebrate light and hope when the days are getting shorter and the nights are closing in.

Nursery studied Diwali, Reception and Year 1 explored Bonfire Night, Year 2 learned about the Winter Solstice, Year 3 and Year 4 worked on Loy Krathong, Year 5 and Year 6 explored the Day of the Dead.
