Writing Roots

At LCPS, we use the Literacy Tree Writing Roots approach to inspire and develop confident, motivated and resilient writers. Each writing unit is rooted in a high-quality, engaging children’s book, providing a rich context and purpose for writing. Through carefully sequenced lessons, children explore the text, develop their understanding of vocabulary and language, and identify and practice the features of different writing genres.

Children are supported to build their confidence and stamina as writers through a range of shared, guided and independent writing opportunities. They are encouraged to apply the grammatical, punctuation and vocabulary knowledge they have developed throughout the unit, before producing their own independent pieces of writing.

The grammatical skills required to become a successful writer are progressively sequenced across the school and are taught in meaningful contexts alongside high-quality texts. This enables children to understand not only how language works, but why particular choices are effective.

Writing is continuously assessed throughout each unit through formative assessment, teacher feedback and opportunities for children to reflect on and improve their work. This supports children to make progress in their writing and enables teachers to identify next steps, while final pieces of writing provide opportunities for summative assessment.

Through Writing Roots, we aim to positively impact children's motivation, confidence and stamina in writing, developing writers who are enthusiastic, creative and able to write effectively for a range of purposes and audiences.

Writer of The Month

We celebrate children's efforts with our monthly Writer of The month awards.  Children's work is selected by the class teacher for showing excellence in content, presentation and effort.  Their work is displayed for the whole school to see on our dedicated board.
